Healing is a shared rhythm, and every person at Attune plays a vital note. Each month, in The Faces of Healing series, we'll introduce the voices, stories, and spirits that bring our mission to life. These are the people guiding recovery, holding space, and showing up every day to walk alongside our clients. Because healing isn’t just about what we do—it’s about who we are.
I actually started my career journey as a public school teacher. I loved teaching, but it was always a struggle to pay the bills. When I pivoted towards nursing I did rotations in a variety of settings. When my behavioral health rotation came I realized I was able to use a lot of my skills from teaching in that setting. I felt like a fish in water. The rest is history!
I prioritize not just listening to my clients, but really HEARING what they have to say. I use my
professional expertise to guide decisions, but always come back to what my client wants and needs.
Ultimately, it’s their life and their body so they need to be really confident and comfortable with
whatever decisions we make.
I always start the morning by checking in with our RN Tanja. Not only does she help me get my day
organized, she also puts a smile on my face. Then I meet with whatever clients are scheduled for that
day. I spend some time every day collaborating with our therapists and managers as well as
documenting in client charts. Our clients will also stop by the office as needed for support with medical
or behavioral health issues.
Most people think there is something “wrong” with people who receive behavioral health care. If
taking care of your mind is wrong, then I don’t want to be right! We should all strive to be brave
enough to ask for help when we need it.
See above lol! But outside the general stigma of engaging in mental health services, I am particularly
passionate about ADHD. It is a very misunderstood diagnosis that has serious implications in the lives
of those affected. I would love for our society to have a better understanding of the brain functioning,
chemistry, and behavioral characteristics that define ADHD so we could better serve those that are
affected.
I have a 20-month old daughter and am expecting a baby boy in October, so self-care looks different
than it used to. BUT there are a few things I do my best to maintain. Silly as it may seem, I really value
having my nails manicured! When I see my hands and nails look pretty, I feel like I’m doing something
right. I also try to put time and energy into having fresh fruits and vegetables prepped and ready to eat
because it makes my body feel good. Finally, I LOVE to indulge in the occasional afternoon nap.
My first job as an RN was in the pediatric unit of a level one psychiatric hospital. While working there I learned that we are all one life decision away from being psychiatric patients. By the same token, we are all one life decision away from NOT being psychiatric patients. Many of us are dealt a difficult hand in life, but at some point you have to choose who you want to be and the kind of life you want to live.
I actually have a BFA in Dance Performance so I love to MOVE! I’m currently into modern and country line dancing. It’s not as simple as it used to be and I enjoy learning them.
...my clients feel good!
You are not alone!
