What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation is a medication-focused assessment that looks at a client's history, current symptoms, and past symptom patterns to determine whether medication could improve their quality of life or their ability to engage in therapy.

Dr. Mota conducts these evaluations directly, gathering history around trauma, current and past mental health symptoms, and whether the client is already engaged in therapy, before recommending next steps.

Is a Psychiatric Evaluation the Same as a Psychological Assessment?

No, and the two get confused often.

A psychiatric evaluation is focused on medication needs.

A psychological assessment is a more extensive diagnostic process, sometimes running dozens of pages, used to clarify diagnoses or identify cognitive and learning differences in more depth.

Attune offers both. Dr. Mota handles psychiatric evaluations and medication management, while psychological assessments are conducted separately by other members of the clinical team.

What Conditions Does Attune Treat?

The two most common reasons clients come to Attune for psychiatric care are depression and anxiety. ADHD is also a frequent reason for evaluation. Beyond those, the team works with trauma-related symptoms, bipolar disorder and mood instability, and co-occurring substance use and mental health concerns.

Attune's psychiatric services are at an outpatient level of care. Clients need to be psychiatrically stable enough to engage safely on an outpatient basis. Anyone experiencing an acute crisis, including active suicidal or homicidal thoughts, needs a higher level of care than an outpatient psychiatric practice can safely provide, and Attune will help point them toward the right resource.

Clients working through substance use recovery often need extra support with sleep, cravings, or mood regulation while their body recalibrates, and that gets factored into the plan directly rather than treated as a separate problem.

Why Tucson Clients Choose Attune

Attune has been part of the Tucson community since 1996. Beyond that longevity, clients consistently point to two things: how quickly they can get in for an appointment, and the option to do sessions by telehealth.

Long waitlists are common with psychiatric care elsewhere. Dr. Mota keeps availability open so clients can be seen quickly, in person or remotely, wherever they're starting from.
